ICE 2002 - Iturralde Crater Expedition
A crater expedition team visited the Iturralde structure in the
Bolivian Amazon in September 2002.
The MagPlane UAV, carrying a Magnetometer,
was part of the mission. The plan called for the platform to take-off
30-kilometers south-west of the crater, autonomously navigate to the crater
site, map the crater and return to home base.
The MagPlane mission
is unique;
- it is the first of its kind
mission for a UAV
- the magnetometer used for mapping
the crater is a space craft instrument and has never before been used
for magnetic mapping of terrestrial structures
- data from the MagPlane mission
will be available over the internet in near real-time

The Iturralde Structure
The Iturralde structure was first identified in satellite images in
the mid-1980s. NASA scientists believe it is the youngest complex meteorite
crater on Earth. The crater is approximately eight kilometers across
and is located in the remote lowlands of Bolivia.
